X-power Gym: A Rational and Minimalist Fitness Space

Unleashing the Power of "X" in Gym Design

The X-power Gym, designed by Fei Fang, stands out from other fitness spaces with its unprecedented rationality and minimalist approach. The designers have eliminated any curved surfaces or arcs, opting instead for a clean and angular aesthetic. The main color palette of gray, combined with simple and extreme lighting, brings the rationality of the symbol "X" in mathematical formulas to life within the space. The design elements are simplified into three categories: rectangles, polylines, and linear surface light sources. The challenge and breakthrough in this design lie in the art of subtraction, creating a space that is both visually striking and functional.

The gym space covers a total area of 520 square meters and is located in Kunming. The designers took advantage of the original building's good lighting area and floor glass, strategically changing the angle of light to penetrate the space through vertical modeling. This design choice creates a sense of machinery and strength, with natural light pouring in from the gaps of fan blade-shaped structures. The clean lines and absence of unnecessary details give the gym a cool and rational atmosphere.

One of the notable features of the X-power Gym is its interaction with light. During nighttime, the use of LED point light sources is minimized, while the proportion of line light sources and face light sources is increased. Thin lines of light emerge from the gaps, creating a sense of broken lines. The top surface is adorned with face light source films composed of multiple rectangles, distributed proportionally. Hidden light sources are used to highlight the shadows under the power lines, adding depth and dimension to the space.

Fei Fang's design for X-power Gym was a bold attempt to transform a fitness space into a rational and calm environment. By subtracting unnecessary elements and embracing a minimalist approach, the designers aimed to create a subtle "conflict" that customers would gradually feel when interacting with the space. The rectangular blocks embedded in the walls, resembling the texture of poured cement, add a touch of industrial style. The design team also paid careful attention to the lighting, ensuring it played a central role in enhancing the overall ambiance of the fitness space.

The X-power Gym design received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2020 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that contribute to quality of life improvements. Fei Fang's design showcases strong technical and creative skills, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
